Volunteer Orientation for Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center

The Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center Auxiliary offers online orientation to its new volunteers. This orientation must be completed before you are placed in a service. Completing this online volunteer orientation does not guarantee that you will be accepted for a volunteer service.

All volunteers must:

1. Complete the Volunteer Application
2. Read the Volunteer Orientation Handbook
3. Read and fill out the:
   • Confidentiality Agreement
   • HIPAA Test
   • Orientation Checklist

After completing this online orientation, please call Theresa Conder at (859)239-1231 to schedule an appointment for the next step of the orientation process, which includes an interview with the Director of Volunteer Services and the required immunizations and other related training.

Application Information

The membership of the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center Auxiliary is open to anyone who is interested in the welfare of the Medical Center. We welcome all new members. Dues are $4.00 for active members, $5.00 for associate members and $100.00 for life membership.

All volunteers who do a service must purchase an Auxiliary smock or vest. The price ranges from $17.75 to $23.00, depending on the type of garment purchased and the size.

Quarterly general meetings are held throughout the year. Members also participate in fund-raising efforts.

Active Membership

We have 18 in-hospital services. Volunteers are always needed to work on a regular schedule once or twice a month, or to substitute when needed. A smock or vest is worn by volunteers with an Auxiliary emblem and nametag. Discounts are available in the cafeteria. The services are as follows:

Information Desk (two locations) - Greet visitors, answer telephone calls and give directions to visitors in locating various areas in the medical center

Patient Escort – Greet and escort patients to various areas within the medical center

Gift Shop - Work as a regular member of the Gift Shop staff in selling merchandise

Made with Care - Sew and stuff pillows for surgery patients

Tour Guides - Conduct tours of the medical center for new volunteers, special groups and other interested individuals

Volunteens/Centre Corps - Assist staff in providing indirect patient care

Scent With Care - Deliver floral arrangements and reading materials to patients; also provide clerical support to staff as requested

Caring Hearts - Host/Hostess who assists families in Surgery Waiting Area

Patient Registration – Assist and escort patients in the registration area.

Patient Representative - Visits patients during their stay to get their opinion on hospital services

BINGO – Host BINGO at McDowell Place once per month for HealthRewards

Helping Hands – Clerical assistance to Volunteer Service Department and other assigned departments

McDowell Place of Danville – Assigned duties by staff

McDowell Wellness Center – Assigned duties by staff

Cancer Care Center – Host/Hostess who assists families in Cancer Resource Room

The Hope Clinic & Pharmacy - Assist clinical staff via assigned duties in meeting needs of patients

Ephraim McDowell Diagnostic Center – Assist staff at the Diagnostic Center by registering patients and escorting them to proper areas

Greeter/Escort Service – Greet and escort patients to all areas of the Medical Center
