September is Baby Safety Month

New parents are bombarded with a lot of information when welcoming home a new baby. Here are a few helpful tips to remember to keep your new addition safe from birth through toddler years.

  • Always use a federally approved car safety seat when traveling in a motor vehicle and make sure it is properly installed.
  • Never carry your infant in your lap while riding in the car.
  • Car seats should be rear facing for the first two years of life.
  • Never put a baby in the front passenger seat of a car, especially a vehicle with air bags.
  • While using an infant carrier, always place baby on the floor, never on a counter or a tabletop.
  • Never leave your baby alone, or look away for even a second, when placing the child on a bed, couch, changing table or in an infant seat.
  • Never leave standing water in the tub or a bucket.
  • Don’t leave baby unattended in the bath, even for a few seconds.
  • Use caution about drapery and mini-blinds.
  • Keep detergents out of reach.
  • Use new cribs and car seats.
  • Protect baby from sun and heat.
  • Closely monitor fevers.
  • Use medication safely.
  • Beware of co-sleeping risks.
  • Always take staircase precautions.
  • Never leave a child unattended around a family pet.
  • Secure television once baby becomes mobile.
  • Baby proof outlets and doors for little fingers.
