Blood Donor Month: A lifesaving Gift for Kentucky Communities

Each year, Blood Donor Month shines a light on the lifesaving impact of blood donors and the vital role they play in patient care. At Ephraim McDowell Health, we see firsthand how blood donations help save lives every day — from emergency situations and surgeries to cancer treatments and childbirth complications.

Why Blood Donation Matters in Kentucky

Blood donation is especially important right here in Kentucky. The Kentucky Blood Center supplies more than 70 hospitals statewide and needs approximately 400 units of blood every day to meet patient needs. Because blood cannot be manufactured, local donations are the only way to maintain a safe and reliable supply.

Even more importantly, blood donated in Kentucky stays in Kentucky first, helping neighbors, friends, and family members when they need it most. From trauma victims to patients undergoing routine surgeries, local donors play a direct role in saving lives close to home.

A Constant Need—All Year Long

While many people associate blood shortages with summer, Kentucky often experiences critical shortages during winter months as well, when illness, weather, and busy schedules can reduce donations. Certain blood types — including O-negative, A-negative, and AB-negative — are especially in demand at various times throughout the year.

Kentucky Blood Center supports communities across the state through permanent donor centers and mobile blood drives in more than 90 counties, helping ensure access even in rural areas.

Health Benefits for Donors

In addition to helping others, donating blood may offer health benefits such as:

  • A mini health screening (blood pressure, pulse, hemoglobin levels)
  • Reduced iron levels, which may support heart health for some individuals
  • The rewarding feeling of making a meaningful difference in someone’s life

Give the Gift of Life

Blood donation is one of the most meaningful ways to give back. This Blood Donor Month, Ephraim McDowell Health encourages our community to step forward and help ensure a strong, stable blood supply for Kentucky patients who depend on it every day. Most healthy adults ages 17 and older (16 with parental consent in some cases) are eligible to donate. The process is safe, simple, and typically takes less than an hour — yet the impact can last a lifetime.

Roll up your sleeve and make a difference. Schedule a blood donation today and help save lives right here in our community. Your donation today could be someone’s tomorrow.
