The Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation is proud to announce the funding of $249,582 to McDowell Wellness Center to support critical equipment upgrades that will enhance safety, accessibility, and overall wellness services for patients and community members.
Made possible through the generosity of donors, this investment will support the replacement of essential, aging equipment, including gym equipment, cardiac and rehabilitation-focused machines, spin bikes, free weights, aerobics studio equipment, and a new pool lift. These updates are vital to meeting the increasing demand for services and ensuring safe, effective fitness and rehabilitation experiences.
“With the continued growth in membership and utilization of our facility, this funding comes at a critical time,” said Dee Minor Coffey, Director of McDowell Wellness Center. “Replacing outdated equipment allows us to better serve individuals at all fitness levels, including those recovering from illness or managing chronic conditions. This investment strengthens our ability to provide a safe, inclusive, and medically supportive environment.”
McDowell Wellness Center plays an important role in supporting not only community wellness, but also clinical services such as cardiac rehabilitation, bariatric programs, and outpatient therapy. Many of the current machines have exceeded their useful life, making replacement essential to maintaining quality care and safety standards.
“This investment would not be possible without the generosity of our donors,” said Dan McKay, President and CEO of Ephraim McDowell Health. “Their support allows us to continue expanding access to high-quality wellness and rehabilitation services. Because of them, we are able to invest in equipment and resources that directly impact patient care, recovery, and long-term health outcomes across our community.”
The new equipment will enhance the Wellness Center’s ability to serve a growing number of members and patients, with thousands of monthly visits and increasing participation across programs.
“Access to high-quality equipment is essential for both clinical outcomes and overall member experience,” said Nick Spoonmore, Administrator of Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. “We are incredibly grateful to the donors who make investments like this possible. Their commitment to our community ensures we can continue delivering exceptional care in a setting that promotes wellness, rehabilitation, and improved quality of life.”
“This investment is incredibly meaningful for the patients we serve,” said Bethany Berry, Rehabilitation Services System Director at Ephraim McDowell Health. “Many of our patients rely on the Wellness Center as part of their recovery journey—whether they are rebuilding strength after surgery, managing a chronic condition, or improving cardiovascular health. Having access to modern, specialized equipment ensures we can provide safe, effective, and progressive care that supports better outcomes and helps patients regain independence and confidence in their daily lives.”
This initiative also supports the Wellness Center’s long-term goal of becoming a certified medical fitness facility, further strengthening its role as a bridge between healthcare and community wellness. McDowell Wellness Center has served the region since 1997 and continues to be a cornerstone of community health, helping individuals of all ages achieve healthier lifestyles.
The Foundation also extends sincere thanks to its generous donors and partners, including Premier Partners: Farmers National Bank, WealthSouth & DOE; Foundation Champions: Kentucky Trust Company; and Friends Trim Masters Charitable Foundation, Inc., Messer Construction, Community Trust Bank, Northwestern Mutual, Dr. Justin and Dr. Katrina Kolasa, and Baird Private Wealth Management.
