It’s hard to believe 2023 is right around the corner, and is usually the case, the transition into the New Year will be another opportunity for many people to evaluate their lives and set new goals. Staying committed to your goals and resolutions can sometimes prove to be a difficult task, especially those that are health-related. This is because health resolutions typically require forming new habits and giving up old ones, which can be a frustrating process if you’re not setting the right goal for yourself.

Selecting the right health resolution is vital to achieving your desired result. Research shows that 95% of New Year’s Resolutions are fitness related, but after just three months, only 10% of people think their resolution will last. A large percentage of the population fail every year with resolutions due to unrealistic goal setting. It’s important to understand what aspects of your lifestyle or health require improvement and set reasonable and definable goals to help you meet your target. Being honest with yourself about your habits and how they affect your health, will help you identify specific areas of your lifestyle that require change in order make relevant health resolutions.

Setting desirable, but unrealistic, goals will only lead to frustration and giving up quickly. It is much better to set smaller, definable goals. This way, as you progress, you can work your way to adjusting your plan to meet your current needs. For example, if your goal is to achieve a healthier weight, don’t just buy a gym membership, specify how many days you’d like to be physically active. If a gym doesn’t fit into your schedule, there are other ways that may work better for you, like taking a walk or doing an online workout at home. Remember, to achieve your personal goals, you need to make changes according to your own lifestyle.

Once you make realistic and definable goals for yourself, there are steps you can take to ensure you maintain your health resolution and meet your goals. Establishing physical and mental support, monitoring your progress and planning for obstacles are all things that need to be taken into consideration to help maintain consistency and ensure progress.
