The Joint Commission Accreditation
The Joint Commission has accredited each of our three hospitals. Those hospitals are Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center (EMRMC), Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital (EMFLH), and Ephraim McDowell James B Haggin Hospital (EMJBHH). This is a measure of the quality of care a facility provides.
Each of the three hospitals have earned certification as Acute Stroke Ready Hospitals through The Joint Commission.
EMRMC has Centers of Excellence for Joint and Spine Surgery as well as Hip Fracture after earning Gold Seals of Approval™ for health care excellence from The Joint Commission. This esteemed recognition for Joint Replacement, Spinal Surgery, and Hip Fracture means the hospital does the right things and does them well for Spinal Surgery, Total Hip Replacement, Total Knee Replacement, and Hip Fracture patients.
Bariatric Program Accreditation
Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center has a Bariatric Program. It has been accredited as a Comprehensive Center. This honor is by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program.
Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center earned accreditation as a Center of Excellence in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery by the Surgical Review Corporation. In addition, Tin Tran, M.D. earned recognition as a Surgeon of Excellence in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
Commission on Cancer Accreditation
Ephraim McDowell Commonwealth Cancer Center has also earned recognition. It is recognized as a Commission on Cancer Accredited Program. This honor is by the American College of Surgeons.
Robotic Center of Excellence
Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center earned accreditation as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery by the Surgical Review Corporation. The accreditation means that EMRMC, along with Drs. George “Swope” Munday and David Montgomery have met nationally recognized standards.
Minimally Invasive Surgery Center of Excellence
Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center earned accreditation as a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Surgery by the Surgical Review Corporation. Surgeons who earned recognition as Surgeons of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Surgery were: Katrina Kolasa, M.D.; David Montgomery, M.D.; George Swope Munday, M.D.; and Tin Tran, M.D..
Hernia Surgery Center of Excellence
Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center earned accreditation as a Center of Excellence in Hernia Surgery by the Surgical Review Corporation. The accreditation means that EMRMC has met nationally recognized standards.
Other Recognitions
We also have accreditations in mammography, CT scans, clinical laboratory and pathology, stereotactic breast biopsy, cardiovascular services, and pharmacy, given by their respective accrediting bodies.
Additionally, EMRMC, EMJBHH and EMFLH are all accredited as a Chest Pain Center, with EMRMC being the only one accredited as a Chest Pain Center with PCI. This means we meet or exceed benchmarks for rapidly diagnosing and treating patients who arrive with symptoms of a heart attack, thus reducing deaths and major adverse events.

- In 2024, Ephraim McDowell Sleep Disorders Center received accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) for demonstrating its commitment to the provision of high-quality care for people who have sleep problems.
- In 2024, EMRMC was recognized by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. The hospital received the Get With The Guidelines – Stroke GoldPlus quality achievement award for its commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines. In addition, the hospital received the Get With The Guidelines – Stroke Rural Recognition Silver and Stroke Rural Recognition Bronze awards.
- In 2024, Ephraim McDowell received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain- MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award.
- In 2024, EMRMC received the 2024 Kentucky Hospital Association (KHA) Quality Award. The award was presented to EMRMC for their efforts with post cardiac arrest and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) life support for those people with life-threatening illness or injury that affects the heart and lungs.
- In 2024, EMJBHH received ACC Chest Pain Center Accreditation from the American College of Cardiology (ACC) for its demonstrated expertise and commitment in treating patients with chest pain. EMJBHH was awarded Chest Pain Center Accreditation based on rigorous onsite evaluation of the staff’s ability to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients who may be experiencing a heart attack.
- In 2023, EMRMC was recognized by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. The hospital received the Get With The Guidelines – Stroke SILVER PLUS with Target: Stroke Honor Roll and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll. In addition, the hospital received the Get With The Guidelines – Rural Stroke BRONZE.
- In 2023, EMRMC received a Quality Award from the Kentucky Hospital Association. The award recognized the hospital’s efforts in early detection and treatment for patients who develop sepsis.
- In 2023, EMRMC received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain – MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award. Only 262 hospitals nationwide received the honor.
- In 2023, EMJBH received the Business of the Year for the continued opportunities it provides to working women. This award was presented by The Fort Harrod Business and Professional Women’s Club.
- In 2023, EMRMC received the 5 Star HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) Security Excellence Award. The award was presented to Ephraim McDowell representatives on October 26 at Kentucky REC (Regional Extension Center) Annual Conference sponsored by the UK HealthCare Kentucky Regional Extension Center.
- In 2022, the Kentucky Hospital Association recognized EMRMC with a Quality Award. The award recognized programs improving the care of heart failure patients and preventing adverse outcomes to patients by properly responding to postpartum hemorrhage.
- In 2019, EMRMC was a High Performing Hospital for COPD services, named by US News & World Report.
- We have Pediatric Ready Emergency Departments at our three hospitals. They meet the criteria set by the Kentucky Pediatric Emergency Care Coalition in compliance with national recommendations and guidelines.
- EMRMC was recognized by the Kentucky Quality Improvement Organization for improvement in reducing its heart failure readmission rate
Another way we ensure quality? Our deadly germ-killing robot, Xena. The robot uses ultraviolet light to kill germs in patient rooms.
