Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center awarded Disease-specific Care Certification for Sepsis from The Joint Commission

Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center (EMRMC) has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Disease-Specific Care for Sepsis Certification by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a health care organization’s commitment to providing safe and quality patient care.

The certification recognizes health care organizations that provide clinical programs across the continuum of care for sepsis, a life-threatening condition resulting from the body’s severe immune response to infection. The certification evaluates how organizations use clinical outcomes and performance measures to identify opportunities to improve care, as well as to educate and prepare patients and their caregivers for discharge.

Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center underwent a rigorous, unannounced onsite review on March 6. During the visit, a Joint Commission reviewer evaluated compliance with related certification standards including giving the highest quality evidence-based care available for a septic patient, and adherence to clinical guidelines for caring for septic patients. Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. The reviewers also conducted onsite observations and interviews.

“Disease-Specific Care Certification for Sepsis recognizes health care organizations committed to striving for excellence and fostering continuous improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” says Ken Grubbs, DNP, MBA, RN, executive vice president of Accreditation and Certification Operations and chief nursing officer, The Joint Commission. “We commend EMRMC for using The Joint Commission certification process to reduce variation in clinical processes and to strengthen its clinical program to drive safer, higher quality and more compassionate care for individuals served.”

“Our Associates and physicians have shown incredible dedication in achieving this certification, and we are extremely proud of them. This recognition reflects our commitment to delivering exceptional care, ensuring that our patients receive the highest quality treatment at our hospital,” says Jason Dean, Chief Quality Officer and Administrator at EMRMC.
