Ephraim McDowell Health (EMH) has made a significant investment in laboratory technology across its health system, further strengthening its commitment to delivering high quality, timely care to their patients in central Kentucky.
The modernization initiative includes installation of advanced laboratory automation and diagnostic systems at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital, Ephraim McDowell James B. Haggin Hospital, and Ephraim McDowell Commonwealth Cancer Center in Danville. New technology includes the Beckman Coulter DxA 5000 Total Laboratory Automation system at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, a DxA Fit automation system at Fort Logan Hospital, enhanced chemistry testing capabilities at James B. Haggin Hospital, and new hematology analyzers at the Cancer Center.
These investments are designed to improve the speed, consistency, and quality of laboratory testing throughout the health system. By automating many of the manual processes involved in specimen handling and testing, the new systems help reduce opportunities for human error, improve standardization of results across facilities, and support faster turnaround times for physicians and patients.

The enhanced laboratory infrastructure also expands testing capabilities throughout the system, including support for advanced procedures such as high-sensitivity troponin I testing, which plays an important role in the rapid assessment and management of patients with suspected cardiac events.
In addition to improving patient care today, the new technology provides a scalable foundation for future growth. The automation platforms increase laboratory capacity without requiring additional laboratory space and allows highly trained laboratory professionals to focus more of their time on complex clinical activities that directly support patient care.
“This investment reflects our ongoing commitment to providing the highest quality healthcare close to home,” said Dan McKay, President and CEO of Ephraim McDowell Health.
“By advancing laboratory automation and diagnostic capabilities across our system, we are enhancing patient safety, improving efficiency, and ensuring our communities have access to the latest innovations in laboratory medicine,” stated Lisa Snyder, system director of Laboratory/Pathology at Ephraim McDowell Health.

The laboratory modernization initiative represents another step forward in Ephraim McDowell Health’s mission to deliver exceptional care through innovation, quality, and continuous improvement.
