In the practice of interventional radiology, a physician uses X-ray, CT or ultrasound to diagnose and treat cancer, disease and trauma. The procedures are minimally invasive. They are used as an alternative to open or laparoscopic surgery. As a result, patients recover faster and typically have less pain.
During an interventional radiology procedure, the physician utilizes imaging displayed on a screen as he guides needles, catheters and wires through the patient’s body. Once the area causing the patient’s problem is reached, the physician may perform a procedure to repair or improve the health issue. In many cases, there is no need for further incisions.
