Maternity Care & Obstetrics

At Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, the labor and delivery unit is dedicated to providing compassionate, personalized care for every stage of your pregnancy and delivery journey.

Our unit is staffed by experienced, licensed OB-GYN physicians and certified nurse midwives (CMNs) who work collaboratively to support your birth plan while prioritizing safety and comfort. In the event that specialized care is needed, a neonatologist is available to provide expert evaluation and treatment for newborns requiring additional support.

The maternity unit also features a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), equipped to care for infants born prematurely or with moderate medical needs. This allows families to remain close to home while receiving high-quality, specialized newborn care.

From prenatal care through delivery and postpartum recovery, our team is committed to guiding you every step of the way—offering expert care, modern technology, and a warm, supportive environment to welcome your newest addition.

Ensuring Your Baby’s Safety

We are serious about ensuring the comfort and safety of our patients and newborns. We keep our maternity units locked with controlled access. Our units use the “HUGS” system as an additional level of comfort and safety. This is an electronic monitoring system that safeguards babies against abduction.

Patients at our hospital also benefit from our participation with the Kentucky Paternity Acknowledgement Program. This allows our staff to assist unmarried couples with completing the forms necessary to voluntarily acknowledge paternity. We encourage parents to complete this process before they leave the hospital.

We encourage our mothers to keep their babies in their room. This enhances the bonding experience. When mothers need rest, our fully staffed Level II NICU offers expert, specialized care for newborns with additional needs—so families can feel confident and supported.

Pre- and post-partum services are provided by board-certified physicians specializing in obstetrics and family medicine and pediatrics. Highly-qualified nurses support the providers. Many have earned various certifications in external fetal monitoring, inpatient obstetrics, childbirth education and maternal newborn nursing. Certified lactation counselors and consultants are also available to help new mothers find success if they choose to breastfeed.

Educational Videos

We will do everything we can to help you prepare for welcoming a new member to your family. Our staff will show you how to care for yourself and your baby once you go home. We recognize that you may still have questions after leaving the hospital. Thus, we have the following videos that you may view using the password provided to you:

Kangaroo Care

We encourage our new moms to practice Kangaroo Care immediately after birth and throughout the hospital stay. This skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby can improve the health of your newborn. It also promotes breastfeeding and bonding as well as a better transition of your baby to his new environment.

Free Classes for Expectant Families

Preparing for Childbirth

This class is designed for mothers who are at least 28 weeks pregnant. It will help you learn what to expect at the hospital and birthing options available. You will need two pillows and one blanket for the third class. Your coach is welcome to join you. Registration is required.

Preparing to Breastfeed

This class will help you to breastfeed your baby successfully. It will also prepare you for breastfeeding even after you return to work. You will need a baby-sized doll or stuffed animal as you participate in the class.
